Overview

About Bathroom Tiling

Bathroom tiling is the single most visible part of the finished room. Done well, it is invisible: walls look flat, grout lines are straight, and nothing snags your foot as you walk on the floor. Done badly, every imperfection catches your eye every day.

The biggest differentiator between a good Adelaide tiler and a great one is the levelling system. Large-format tiles (anything over 600x600) are almost impossible to lay lippage-free without a calibrated tile levelling system. Our network tilers use MLT, Raimondi, or Rubi systems as standard, not as an upgrade.

Substrate preparation is where budget jobs fail. Wall sheets must be flat (max 3mm over 2m). Floors must be screed-levelled before tiling. Expansion joints must be cut into both the substrate and the tile field at perimeters. Skipping any of these steps creates visible problems within 12 months: cracked grout, tile popping, visible lippage.

Grout is not just a colour choice. Adelaide's hard water stains white grout quickly. A mid-tone grey or a matching tile-colour grout holds up better over 5 to 10 years. Epoxy grout costs more but is effectively stain-proof and is worth it in shower floors and niches.

What We Solve

Common situations our network handles.

Recognise any of these?

  • Tile lippage is already showing on the current bathroom (uneven edges you can feel with your feet).
  • Large-format porcelain tiles are in your plan but the average tiler will not commit to laying them flat.
  • Grout colour choice matters to you and most tilers will not discuss options beyond white and grey.
  • You have been quoted $55/sqm which feels too cheap and $180/sqm which feels too expensive.

Here is what we do about it.

  • Calibrated tile levelling systems (MLT, Raimondi, or Rubi) for flat, non-lippage finishes on large-format tiles.
  • Pre-mix polymer-modified adhesives appropriate to substrate and tile size.
  • Grout colour samples and recommendations based on tile, light, and maintenance.
  • Expansion joint planning at perimeters, thresholds, and column intersections.

FAQ

Bathroom Tiling: your questions.

What is the typical cost per square metre of bathroom tiling in Adelaide?

+

Supply-and-lay for bathroom tiling in Adelaide usually falls between $95 and $180 per square metre. The low end is 300x600 ceramic. The high end is 1200x2400 porcelain or natural stone. Labour alone is $75 to $120/sqm.

Should I use large-format tiles or small tiles?

+

In most bathrooms, large-format tiles (600x1200, 600x600) read as more expensive and are easier to clean. Mosaics are appropriate for feature walls, shower floors (for the slip resistance), and niches. Avoid mosaics on main walls in small bathrooms: the grout lines shrink the space visually.

What grout colour should I use?

+

Match the grout to the tile for a seamless finish (modern, monochrome look). Contrast the grout against the tile for a graphic, high-design look (think subway tiles with charcoal grout). In most Adelaide bathrooms, a mid-grey grout hides dirt better than a pure white and looks better for longer.

How long does bathroom tiling take?

+

Tiling the average Adelaide bathroom takes 4 to 6 days for floor and walls, plus 2 to 3 days for grouting and silicone. The tile supply lead time often outlasts the labour: allow 2 to 6 weeks for stock tiles, 8 to 14 weeks for special-order or imported.
